Kids, Teens, Moms and the New Media

Dear Parents,

We all know that media and technology and their effects are taking more and more time and space in our everyday lives. With the daily use of smartphones, tablets and computers, we are linked and connected to a virtual and real life that we did not have before. Using the relatively new instruments of Facebook, Twitter and Skype – just to mention a few – we “chat” with and “see” our families, relatives and friends from wherever we live. From abroad, we keep in “touch” with our friends at home and we can “be there” for their celebrations and sad moments in life. The world has become smaller and more “communicative” than before. But is this communication real? Is it perhaps too good to be true?

For this issue, we focussed on many of the questions I myself want answers for. What are the health-related issues or benefits of using the new media? How does “consumption” of media affect teenagers? Is TV time bad for little kids? And what are these Mommy blogs I keep hearing about? We found terrific writers to answer these questions and more. So please enjoy our great features and columns.

The Mothering Matters team would love to hear your own thoughts on this topic. Please feel free to comment on our features and columns, especially if you strongly agree or disagree with the ideas. Please also write us below if there are any subjects you would like us to tackle in the near future. That is surely an upside of the new media – we can actually communicate with our readers online. If you would like to write articles or be more active in our Internet magazine, do not hesitate to contact us.

Happy reading!
