Colourful Birds Craft
I love activities that allow children lots of opportunity to decorate and choose their own colours and patterns; they can express themselves and experiment with design. Sometimes, of course, it can be good to have some control over this creativity. This activity is one example of “controlled expression,” as the children can decorate the bird freely while the overall shape is already established.
Materials:
- Coloured card, size A4
- Decorating materials, e.g., stickers, pens, glitter
- Crepe paper or other thin paper, size A5
- Small piece of orange or yellow card
- Googly eyes or white stickers and black pen
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- String or ribbon (optional)
Instructions:
1. On the A4 card draw a large outline of a bird and cut it out.
2. Decorate the bird (just one side if you want to stick it to the wall, both sides if you are hanging it on a string).
3. Cut a small slit in the middle of the bird. Fold the A5 paper like a fan and push it through the slit to make the wings.
4. Stick on the eyes (or draw black dots on white stickers and use those).
5. Cut a triangle beak from the orange card. Make a small cut on the bird’s head and glue the beak in place.
6. If you want to hang up your bird, attach the ribbon/string to the head.
