Words on the Fridge

Crafty Kids: Words on the Fridge

A new school year is beginning and my youngest son is going to primary school for the first time. It is a stressful time for him and for me. Therefore I decided that, as he is going to discover the world of the written word, it would be interesting to display, from time to time, some positive words on the fridge to creatively minimize the stress for mother and son.

In a shop in Zurich I found a collection of cards in different colours, with the names of the days of the week. I chose the word weekend as the first inspiring card and “posted” it on my fridge.

To make cards with words is simple, and the only limit is your imagination or the door space on your fridge.

Materials:

  • Magazines
  • Drawings from the children (old or new)
  • Photos
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Magnets

Method:

Choose big words from a magazine. Decide on the language – of course, you can even make it in two or more languages. You can also, with a little more work, compose words by combining different letters; the visual effect can be quite interesting.

The second step is to find a card to match the word – it could be simply a coloured card, or it could have an image that supports the word. Use photos, even of your children or from magazines, drawings by the children, or your own drawings.

Glue everything together (with the magnet on the back of the word card), and post it on the fridge, with the hope that in a few months you and your child will also be able to compose some sentences.

Have a good school year!

P.S. I describe this project as done by a parent, but of course this project can also be done – probably better – by children!
